Family Therapy
Family therapy can repair relationships
and solve problems that have been eating away at families
for years and family therapy can also become part of
the solution if just one member of the family is having
problems. Often when there are problems within a family
system the family is prone to blaming it all on one
person; perhaps the alcoholic or the drug addict, the
depressed teenager, the workaholic, etc, but in reality
each member of the family has played a part in the dysfunction.
The goal of family therapy is to
air feelings that have not been expressed out of fear
or because a member of the family has been unable or
unwilling to listen to the feedback he/she has been
receiving. With increasing popularity, parents have
sought out treatment for out of control adolescents
and have stumbled in the positive process of family
therapy. Instead of being able to write off one family
member as bad, each member becomes part of the solutions
and helps the "person in trouble" learn how
to function normally in society.
Substance abuse, alcoholism and mental
illness on the part of a young adult drive families
into therapy, hopeful that they will find an answer
to what seems like a never-ending problem. When the
problem person is taken out of the home many families
find that the dysfunction continues only in different
ways, thus the need for family therapy. Family therapy
digs to the root of the problem and lets each member
of the family go through his or her own individual process.
Family healing is one of the most important aspects
of a recovering person's life. If the family can become
a functional unit the individual is less likely to struggle
when placed back into the home.
The type of communication used during
family therapy makes it easier for the suffering individual
to integrate back into the real world. By using family
therapy thus far the individual has already started
a positive support system and has people to turn to
if he/she finds that he/she is in trouble.
Family therapy also teaches new parenting
techniques parents may not have been aware of or were
too afraid to try. Family therapy brings families back
together and teaches them how to live in harmony and
love more freely. Licensed therapists are trained to
help families in ways that families may not think to
help themselves. Through group sessions, visits and
conversations families learn how to loving and kind
towards one another.
